electroacupuncture acupunctureElectroacupuncture is Acupuncture that involves placing a mild electrical current, much like a  Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) unit, on selected needles. It provides even more stimulation to tight tender muscle fibers than traditional acupuncture, for a period of usually 15 minutes. Traditionally the acupuncturist would manually move the needle in different ways to stimulate the release of the muscle. This manual stimulation is still done by Acupuncture Pain and Stress Center, and it tends to feel very big to patients. Electroacupuncture is used as an alternative to manual stimulation.

What does an Electroacupuncture Session look like?

electroacupuncture raleigh acupunctureElectroacupuncture is performed by an acupuncturist. Depending on your treatment center, your session may look similar to this:

  • To begin, your acupuncturist will chat with you and get a good idea of what your symptoms are.
  • Range of motion, manual muscle tests, palpation and other appropriate hands on tests will be performed to narrow down the areas that need to be treated.
  • Then, your practitioner will let you know what your treatment plan will be.
  • When the first session begins, you’ll be seated on the table and your practitioner will make the space comfortable for you. They’ll insert the appropriate needle.
  • The electrodes are connected to the needles and they’re hooked up to a electroacupuncture machine.
  • Your practitioner will then turn the machine on, and explain the sensations you will likely feel. At first, the intensity your practitioner uses will be low and it will go up from there. Any adjustments that need to be made regarding intensity will be made based on your feedback.
  • Once the correct, comfortable intensity is achieved the session will last 15-20 minutes.

Does Electroacupuncture Hurt?

Electroacupuncture should never hurt. First of all, the electricity isn’t acting directly on you. As discussed above everything will be explained and the intensity will never be more than you are comfortable with.  Most people feel some vibration and tingling, but no pain. Many patients remark about how it feels good almost like a massage.

How Effective is Electroacupuncture Treatment?

It is believed that electroacupuncture can help with different ailments and issues, including the following:

  • Relieving acute and short-term pain
