Acupuncture for chronic pain

I see many patients who come to acupuncture as a last resort to fix their chronic pain.  Below is an excerpt from one of the most revered Chinese medical texts.  In the text, it is talking about treating chronic pain with acupuncture, even longstanding issues.  Does this mean you can expect to be healed from all your chronic pain with acupuncture therapy, no? But for many who come in wanting to use acupuncture for chronic pain, acupuncture can provide real relief*. If I cannot get rid of your issue, the goal will be pain relief. I will try to provide you with the most pain relief possible with maintenance acupuncture stretched out as long as we can between treatments while still maintaining your pain relief.

My interpretation for the non-acupuncturist:

When the body’s faced with illness and disease, it is as if there is a thorn or blockage. No matter how long the body has been fighting to correct these issues, there is hope. Anyone who says there is no way of treating chronic illness is wrong.  The acupuncturist’s job is to look for the underlying cause of these issues. Then work can then be done to correct the issues and get the body working again. It does not matter how long you have struggled; it can be treated.  Those that say this is not true have not developed enough skills.
